The central character is Danica (Tika Sumpter), a highly successful, buttoned-up advertising executive living a meticulously planned life in New York. Danica lives by “the list”—a strict checklist of requirements for her perfect man. She believes she’s finally found him in Charlie (Mehcad Brooks), a mysterious long-distance boyfriend she’s never met in person, who works on an offshore oil rig and can never video chat—a clear red flag that Danica chooses to ignore.

Danica’s ordered life is thrown into hilarious chaos when her wilder, recently paroled sister, Tanya (Tiffany Haddish), moves in. Fresh out of prison and possessing zero filter but tons of street smarts, Tanya immediately smells a rat. She is convinced that Danica is being “catfished”—lured into a relationship by someone using a fake identity online.

With the help of their eccentric, marijuana-smoking mother, Lola (Whoopi Goldberg), Tanya sets out on a mission to expose the fraud and save her sister, even if it means completely blowing up Danica’s carefully constructed world.
